Burnham-on-Sea City Council issued a statement with suggestions on how the funding could be used by local groups.

These include the repair of local businesses / sites, the development of sustainable transport and the improvement of the natural environment.

Whatever the use, the goal is to make improvements to these communities.

A full list of the suggestions highlighted by the board can be found below:

Growing local foods – community gardens or orchards

Improve our natural environment – projects such as nature trails, rewilding and replanting that enhance and improve our natural environment and help people benefit more from it

Repair, reuse and share – repair cafes, stuff libraries and other opportunities that build communities around reducing the amount of junk that goes to the landfill

Climate education and communication – events, activities and installations that engage and interest people in the environment and take climate action, such as art and media projects, climate citizens’ assemblies, citizen science projects, the youth climate action, forestry schools, workshops, movie nights and conferences

Low carbon skills – strengthen the capacity of your community to become a low carbon community and to ensure a fairer, greener future for all. This could include training in carbon literacy, helping people in your community develop skills such as the sustainable maintenance, repair, manufacturing and manufacturing of electric vehicles.

Sustainable transport – help people to move around more easily by using sustainable means of transport and to leave their cars more often at home, whether they wish to do their shopping at home, to go to school or to work. This can include community electric car clubs, community charging centers, local walking or cycling groups to school, or community (electric) bicycle loan programs.

Improve resource efficiency – energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction – projects, including renewable energies, that improve places (such as halls, centers, allotments, parks and empty spaces) by reducing emissions of carbon, and encourage greater use of space and thus strengthen their community

Net zero community plans and actions – community-led projects that help your community plan and implement actions to reduce local carbon emissions or adapt to the local impacts of climate change.

A spokesperson for the board added: “However, Burnham and Weston Energy are open to your ideas – you will no doubt have some great ideas they haven’t even thought of! They want to encourage you to think big in terms of positive impact you will have on your local community “.
