Celebrate Shark Week at the SEA LIFE Aquarium

It’s “Shark Week” at American Dream’s SEA LIFE Aquarium! Just in time to coincide with Shark Week on Discovery, the aquarium celebrates all things shark and teaches visitors about these cunning and intriguing predators.

SEA LIFE, located at American Dream in East Rutherford, has more than 3,000 creatures, including sharks. There are more than 500 species of sharks in our oceans, and you can discover some of them in SEA LIFE’s ocean tunnel.

We had the chance to take a tour of the aquarium with curator Rich Weddle and learn more about these amazing creatures.

One of the great things about Shark Week is that it’s an opportunity to learn more about sharks beyond the scary images often seen in movies. Weddle said when trainers enter the tank, they should be careful not to startle the sharks, not the other way around!

SEA LIFE/The Blacktip Reed Shark is easy to spot with its prominent black markings.

The blacktip reef shark is one of the favorites to spot at SEA LIFE. Did you know that they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs?

STAFF PHOTO/SEA LIFE curator Rich Weddle talked to us about the touch tank creatures.

We also had the chance to discover the sea anemones in the interactive touch experience.

STAFF PHOTO/The moon jellyfish can be seen in many different colors.

Playing with the interactive light display for the moon jellyfish was also fun.

The whole aquarium was set up interactively with a fun “City Under the Sea” theme and was appealing to my 10 year old, but would also be a great experience for children as young as babies and toddlers.

Shark Week continues through Saturday July 30 at SEA LIFE, located at American Dream, 1 American Dream Way, East Rutherford. Click here for tickets.
