What happened to The Eve of the Daleks?
After the events of the Doctor Who Special New Year’s Day, The Eve of the Daleks, the current crew of the TARDIS are reunited and set off on new adventures. However, at one point in the time-looped episode, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) told Yaz (Mandip Gill) that her “actions” were “catching up” to her. Yaz later asked her what she meant, and the doctor shrugged. But we all know it: The Thirteenth Doctor is heading for a regeneration. In the Flux season finale, a character named “Time” told the Doctor, “Your time is coming to an end … nothing is eternal, no regeneration, no life.”

Trailer for Doctor Who: the legend of the sea devils
In the trailer for Legend of the sea devils we see the Doctor, Yaz, and Dan on a trip to 19th century China, where they meet Pirate Queen Madame Ching (Crystal Yu). And the final shot in the trailer revealed a Sea Devil, an opponent of the Doctor who we haven’t seen onscreen since the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) ‘s 1984 series, “Warriors of the Deep.”
Who are the sea devils?
First introduced in a 1972 series by Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) titled “The Devils of the Sea,” these aquatic life forms are not aliens, but rather an offshoot of an ancient sentient reptilian species, the Silurians.
Introduced in a 1970 Third Doctor series titled “Doctor Who and the Silurians,” this breed of upright reptiles ruled the Earth for centuries and coexisted alongside dinosaurs before human evolution. The reptilian Silurians and their aquatic cousins Sea Devil appeared in 1984’s “Warriors of the Deep”. But that wasn’t until the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) ‘s 2010 episodes “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood” that the Silurians have returned. After their return, the Silurians appeared sporadically throughout the Smith and Capaldi eras, but the Sea Devils were ignored.
Until now! The title of Legend of the sea devils suggests that Doctor Who reevaluates the canonicity of the original Sea Devils and will attempt to reconcile them with previous versions of The Doctor. The timeline has been reset and altered a bit since the era of the Fifth Doctor, which could indicate that these Sea Devils have a different purpose than what we’ve seen before. And while previous encounters with Sea Devil took place in the 20th and 21st centuries, this episode takes place in the 19th century. So at least from a Sea Devils perspective, that could mean we’re about to see the first meeting between the Doctor and their kind.

When will the next one Doctor Who actor to be announced?
So many fans underlined, in January 2009, it was revealed that Matt Smith was replacing David Tennant as Doctor in 2010. It was almost a year before the regeneration actually happened on screen. From 2009 to early 2010, David Tennant also had a few specials to wrap up his tenure as the Tenth Doctor, but fans knew who the next Doctor would be.
Right now we’re in a similar position to fans in 2009; we watch specials from a practicing doctor knowing a new one is coming. But the New Doctor has not been revealed, and the final episode with the titular is coming much earlier.
After Jodie Whittaker’s departure, showrunner Chris Chibnall will also be leaving, making way for the return of showrunner Russel T Davies, who relaunched Which in 2005. Has Davies already chosen the new Doctor? Have they started filming?
We do not know. But if Doctor Who the history of production is rooted in tradition, the answer is yes. Not only was the new Doctor likely chosen, they may have already filmed their regeneration scene. It means The legend of the sea devils brings us a little closer to the new face of Doctor Who for 2023 and beyond.
