A three-week internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) gave Midshipman Ryan Hogg the hands-on experience he was looking to enter his second year at the US Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Wash. Maryland.

That was the theme of the briefing Hogg provided on August 12, two days before he left for Annapolis for another semester of learning.

Hogg said the one activity that stood out during his time at NSWCDD was testing a “T Box,” named after him because it’s shaped like the letter “T.”

“It was cool because it was the first hands-on test I got to do myself,” Hogg said. “I was able to learn all the concepts in school and finally apply them to a big project that lasted for years. A lot of money was put into it. They gave a lot of responsibility to an intern who had been there for a week. . It was good and it made me grow a lot more.”

Part of this project was part of an innovation grant or iGrant that the Chief Technology Office (CTO) sponsors. iGrants are a mechanism that allows the NSWCDD workforce to quickly turn ideas into action to help solve complex challenges for combatants. The NSWCDD and USNA have a long-standing internship program.

There have been 20 USNA interns since 2015 and 30 since 2009. The program was suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, since 2009, nearly 800 aspirants have participated in STEM-based tours at NSWCDD.

Aspirants’ interns are usually juniors or seniors, and internships typically last three or four weeks. They have a meeting with the NSWCDD Commander the first week of their internship, which includes a welcome address and an overview of plans for the summer. USNA mentors and coordinators attend.

Midshipmen also participate in technical briefings, tours and demonstrations. The NSWCDD CTO has worked closely with NSWCDD technical departments to provide practical internship opportunities.

“We’ve received more interest than ever, with more than 30 projects applying to mentor a USNA summer intern,” said Tamara Stuart, NSWCDD Innovation Lab Director and NSWCDD Effort Manager. USNA of NSWCDD.

The ultimate goal of the internship program is to provide work experience, research experience, mentorship, professional network, and guidance for career aspirations.

The NSWCDD sponsored six USNA interns this summer, increasing their interest in the Engineer Duty Officer (EDO) career field.

EDOs are career naval officers with advanced degrees. They provide technical and commercial leadership in areas such as design, acquisition, construction, maintenance and modernization. An officer may become EDO upon commissioning or through a mid-career lateral transfer after completing a surface or underwater warfare qualification.

Hogg said he would bring a lot of knowledge and expertise back to the Naval Academy. His brief presentation demonstrated a deep understanding of his time at NSWCDD. He said the hands-on experience allowed him to learn from his mistakes.

Hogg pledged to keep in touch with many NSWCDD employees he met while living at the War Center Division. He’s also looking forward to his next chapter at the Naval Academy, where he’s an active member of the club’s Midshipmen’s Ultimate Frisbee team that ranked ninth in the nation last semester.

“I really enjoyed this internship,” Hogg said. “It gave me the inspiration to try another internship next semester. I enjoyed working with the civilian sector and next time I would like to do something space related with NASA or the Space Force .I think it’s important that this internship gave me a lot of Connections.”
