YOU will never look at Southend the same way again after a Mystery-on-Sea walking tour.
The 90-minute tour of Southend’s Royal Terrace and Clifftown areas is woven with local history, ghost stories, legends and unexplained mysteries. Oh, and a bit of magic too!
Skilled storytellers and magicians, Tracy Wise and Adrian Fox make Technicolor history burst with their tours.
Intriguing facts include that Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton were once guests at the Royal Hotel. In fact, Lady Hamilton hosted a ball for Nelson before he left for Trafalgar, and that was the last time she saw him (the Halloween event at the Royal Hotel in October will be inspired by this story).
“People sometimes have a bad image of Southend and our walking tour is a way to appreciate its rich and fascinating history,” Tracy said.
“As well as history, there is a surprising amount of ghostly experience in Southend. Over the three years we have run, we have been able to collect many stories from people about their own supernatural experiences.
Adrian is a former radio presenter who worked for Essex Radio and had a ghostly experience in the studios there. Tracy had her own supernatural experience before one of her monthly shows at the Royal Hotel where unexplained puddles began to appear all over the lobby.
“It was consistent with an experience in the building next door where there were reports of builders in the ’80s moving their tools around and cleaning up puddles,” Tracy explained.
Tracy is a magician and author who performs monthly at the Royal Hotel with her shows Crime Scene Illusion and Tales From the Shadows, based on the hotel’s history and ghost stories.
Adrian is a former radio DJ and a magician and speaker. He is also chairman of Southend’s local magic society, Southend Sorcerers, of which Tracy is also a member. The walking tours are wheelchair friendly and suitable for people aged ten and over.
Dogs are welcome and groups are limited to a maximum of 20 people. The couple are set to launch a fact-finding tour of the historic Shoeburyness Garrison site, with dates to be confirmed. The next show at the Hôtel Royal will be the Halloween Special on October 27th.
