Nautical News: Shanty album release and tour
They say some things never leave us. They are always there, just out of reach, between sleep and dreams. Between the foreshore and the seabed. The plaintive moan of a celibate seal. The treasure we never found. The life we never led.
But fear not, the Wellington Sea Shanty Society (WSSS) has returned from exile with a bag of forgotten futures! Secrets dropped by the sea in the form of “Sea Shanties of the 70’s, 80’s & Today!” (their new EP).
Every song is a mystery oyster lovingly shucked by artists like Vorn including The Father Was Marin, Lake Davineer, Nick De La Mer, Thomas Un Copa and longtime slum foes ‘The Salty Wailers’. (Quarter) mastering by Mike Gibson.
These new shacks have been dedicated to memory (human and digital) in the earthquake-prone innards of an empty Wellington office block. A windswept shelf overlooking a dark harbor – what better place to draw the joy of salty oblivion?
To celebrate, the WSSS invites you to do just that – by bringing their singing, lively show to a whare or flophouse near you. There will also be a scavenger hunt for handmade bounties by WSSS alumni and jeweler Su Keates, as well as a map by cartographer extraordinaire Sam Van Der Weerden.
