why i renewed my vows at sea

Rachel rang the doorbell of our suite when she arrived to escort us to the atrium, which served as a chapel. A surreptitious phone call alerted pianist Ed that we were approaching, and Pachelbel’s beautiful Canon in D major sounded as we descended the grand staircase, turned to the red carpet and… Oh my God.

When Rachel said some officers were there as alternate guests, we expected two or three, but there were 10 or more, all in uniform. “Never again,” my rather intimidated husband whispered as we walked the red carpet. And then we left. Cruise Director Dru spoke of love, Captain Saro said our vows, we read the words we had written (Mark excelled at references to storms and anchors) and the deed was done.

We ended the day at Prime 7, a restaurant where everything is great, including shrimp, steak and, for one night only, our “wedding” cake. He was carried on a cart by singing waiters and could have fed all five thousand people. Yes, the celebration was extravagant – overdone, even – but also perfect. Just as I expected from the most expensive ship in the world.
